New Jersey Devils Name Sheldon Keefe As 31st Head Coach

Keefe, 42, Leaves Toronto Maple Leafs After Two Seasons

Devils Hope to Rebound After Dismal 2022-23 Season

The New Jersey Devils have named Sheldon Keefe as their 31st head coach in franchise history, according to league sources. Keefe, 42, spent the past two seasons as head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he led the team to two playoff appearances but failed to advance past the first round.

Keefe inherits a Devils team that finished with the second-worst record in the NHL during the 2022-23 season. The Devils have not made the playoffs since 2018 and have not won a Stanley Cup since 2003.

Keefe is known for his offensive-minded style of play and his ability to develop young players. He was an assistant coach with the Maple Leafs for five seasons before being promoted to head coach in 2021.

The Devils are hoping that Keefe can turn around their fortunes and lead them back to the playoffs. The team has a number of young players with potential, including Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, and Dougie Hamilton.

Keefe will be introduced as the Devils' new head coach at a press conference on Thursday.
